Under the Hood of Gatsby's Dream

I always wanted to modify a car, getting to learn what really happens under the hood. I've thought for the longest time that it would be the coolest thing I can do. Maybe you start off with something small, something ordinary but when the mods start to add up it becomes something totally different and totally unique. Maybe some new rims, a nice matte wrap, and eventually a custom exhaust. When I was reading the great Gatsby this week I realized that Gatsby kind've does the same thing but with his life instead of a car.

Take Gatsby's yellow car for example, its like his perfect build. Its loud, colorful, flashy, and hard to miss-just like how he is in real life. When you look at his car everything about it makes it scream "I made it." he's just showing off all the stuff he has done in order to impress Daisy. The car shows how much he has done and how far he's come, and how badly he wants to be with her.

In class this week we actually had to do a skit for chapter 7 for the 12th graders. Acting it out in class made me realize just how extreme the chapter really was, the arguments, fights and the car accident. Getting to play and act it out helped me understand how much Gatsby's "perfect build" started falling apart.

By the end of the chapter, his dream starts to crash down just like his car. The same thing showed and flaunted his success turned into something else, a symbol of destruction. It made me really think-sometimes when people focus too much on upgrading and showing off, they start to zone out. Gatsby built his life from the ground up, but in the end some of the best mods cant even fix what's broken inside.
